College Rule #13: Express Yourself
Today I was in the craft store. I bought a miniature Harlequin drawer set, and a set of acrylics paints.
I AM SO EXCITED TO PAINT! I’ve been needing this.
Every now and then, you treat yourself to a stress reliever. I’m not talking about drinking, I’m talking about a creative endeavor. Walk into Wal-Mart and buy a fuzzy poster to color. Or learn how to make hemp necklaces. Heck, see what kind of sculptures you can make from jello salad.
Art projects are so therapeutic. Especially in contrast with the other “relaxing” activities like watching TV and surfing the internet. Sure, we’re zoning out, but our minds are still being barraged by a dizzying stream of images.
Doing something creative is a way to regain control over a portion of our hectic lives. It creates a sense of calm, and helps us to reconnect with ourselves. (Almost like a way of meditating.)
Sleep is great. But I promise you’ll also need some YOU time, without friends or the media intruding. So draw, write, paint, sing, play music….whatever you need to do to instill peace within.
