College Rule #12: Join A Club That Keeps You Fit
Hating competition is no excuse. I bet you’d be surprise at how much fun the Beginner Yoga Class is on campus. Or check out some of the more relaxed intramural leagues. Personally I recommend joining Ultimate Frisbee, but that’s just me.
I’m big on athletic clubs for two reasons: it prevents you from becoming too gelatinous, and it helps to make you a more well-rounded person.
Allow me to explain that last bit. Let’s say you’re a goth kid who wears freaky clothes all day. Or a book-worm who doesn’t get along with others. Or better yet, the campus hottie and socialite.
Sports has a beautiful way of breaking down all those barriers. In a game, there is no time or opportunity to keep up facades. You just have to be yourself and work with your teammates. The stripped down environment is sooo conducive to making friends. It’s like being drunk, only the opposite, and better.
My closing argument is that people who play any sport are more open, confident, and optimistic; it is the mark of a healthy person. Health is one of those things that can start on the outside and work it’s way in.
It can be a scary leap of faith to join a team. It certainly was for me. Do a little bit of homework and see what organizations are the most accepting of beginners. Then pick your favorite and GO FOR IT!
You won’t regret it, I promise. Stick with it for at least a month and watch that athleticism work it’s magic on you.
