College Rule #8: Think Before Going Greek

Published by livelaughlove at 11:44 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I know some of you out there are Greek and love it.

Now let me explain why I love being an independent.

1st: I’m independent. No house owns me, no house tells me what to do. They can’t tell me what to wear, where to be, who to date, how many events I need to attend to achieve the right number of activity points…

I’m not stuck. If any of my friends for some reason decide to gang up against me, I can just leave that group and that be the end of it. It’s not like I signed a contract saying I pledged to be in it for life.

If someone is completely unrelated to me and I don’t care about them, I don’t have to lie and call them my sister.

I don’t have to force myself to go along with silly rituals.

I don’t have to be a part of a system that creates unnecessary differences and divisions among the student body. (Though it does affect me, whether I join or not)

I don’t have to pay large sums of money in order to call some dipshits my sisters.

I don’t have to be apart of the petty process they call rush.

There is a huge difference between clubs and fraternities/sororities. In clubs you become friends with people who like the same things you do.

In fraternities and sororities, the only common bond you share is that you are all too insecure to be without a guaranteed social network, and you also all like to think you’re better than everyone else.

Note: Service fraternities and sororities are excluded from the above statement.

Also Note: I don’t care that much. Some days I like the Greeks more than others. And there are some people who really do love it and are glad the joined. It could be for you. Just be careful. And hope to God that the people in your house makes going through all the bullshit worth it.
